Description

Caliburn is the enchanted blade that was once wielded by Uthyr Pendragon and then later by his son after Artorius pulled it out of the stone. It is a mysterious artifact whose origins are shrouded in mystery. Whoever so touched the sword would have their hands burnt as if they had touched molten lava. Only Uthyr and his lineage were able to wield the sword without harm for some reason. Why was it so is a topic that has been widely disputed since the sword first appeared. Some speculate that the reason was that Uthyr and his line were actually divine in origin, while others speculate that it was because they in reality had dragon's blood coursing through them. Regardless of the reason, many took the mere act of holding the sword unharmed as proof of Uthyr's line having the right to rule over all of Britannia.

In conjunction with Caliburn's unique enchantment that allowed only Uthyr's line to wield it, it also had the uncanny ability to be easily pushed by its wielders into solid objects as if said objects were the sword's natural sheaths. In this state, the sword was completely stuck to the object as if the both of them were fused together by lava. Only one of Uthyr's line could draw the sword out once again. Despite this though, many usually attempted to pull it out whenever it was like this. For although holding the sword unharmed was considered the definite right to rule by most, many believed that if they could pull the sword out, they would inherit the right to rule over Britannia even if it cost them their hands getting burnt. Regardless of anyone's tenacity at trying to pull out said sword though, it has been proven time and again that only those of Uthyr's line could do such a feat easily and unharmed.

Apart from Caliburn's abilities to ceremonially symbolize Uthyr and his line's right to rule Britannia, it also had other abilities as discovered by Artorius when he took the sword out to battle. In battle, the sword's burning magic could be used to strike down foes with the fury of a fiery volcano. Caliburn was even more impressive when it was dual wielded alongside Excalibur after Artorius earned his second legendary sword. Its fires were a great complement to Excalibur's divine water-like abilities. However despite its amazing abilities, Caliburn did have its drawbacks. It tended to be more destructive when whoever wielded it was overcome by extreme emotions such as unforgiving rage spawned from betrayal. In fact, due to the sword's power, such unstable emotions could be fueled much further to such a degree that they could even consume the sword's wielder completely. In such a furious state, the wielder could do all sorts of unspeakable and frightening things that they wouldn't normally do. One of the more famous and extreme recorded instances of this was during the battle between Artorius and the decadent Roman Emperor Lucius Hiberius in which a small volcanic crater was created in the heat of the conflict. Because of this, Caliburn was considered as much of a terrifying weapon as a beacon of light depending on who wielded it and how it was used.

In time though, Caliburn's fate was finally sealed during Artorius' final battle when the very sword was struck through his body by Artorius' very own son in their first and final embrace. Unlike the several other times that the sword had been stuck into solid objects, this time Caliburn was forever permanently embedded. It being like this however was not caused by the sword's magic but by Artorius' very own will. By the time of Artorius' final battle, he had grown old and he felt that it was high time that he passed the torch. He also felt that Caliburn for all the glory and travesties that it had brought, it like him was no longer needed by the next generation. So through sheer willpower, Artorius' mortal wound had tightened its very grip on to the very sword that created it. Even after Artorius' soul left the mortal plane, its grip on Caliburn was ever stalwart, a testament to Artorius' final convictions.

As Caliburn could not be removed, it was buried with Artorius' body in the Isle of Avalon. In modern times, there have been a few who have searched for Artorius' tomb in hopes of finding Caliburn still embedded in his corpse. They like so many in the past believe that if they could pull the sword out, they could inherit the glory that was once belonged to Artorius. Whether or not anyone has yet rediscovered Caliburn, let alone find a way to Avalon, it seems like Artorius' very spirit refuses to let anyone but him forever bare the burden of the fiery sword.
